What $300,000 will buy you in Pittsburgh (if you act fast)

If you’re in the market to buy a home in Pittsburgh, now is a great time to shop around. Sales have slowed for the summer as warm weather invites people to explore the outdoors or go on vacation, says Lori Hummel, a real estate agent with Howard Hanna Real Estate Services.

“Buyers looking to enter a school district have typically bought their homes in late June. So we’re seeing it slow down a bit,” Hummel says. “It is natural in our market and not an indication or reflection of what is happening in the economy.”

The good news is that there are homes available for around $300,000 or less in most areas of the city and surrounding areas, but if you find something you like, you’ll probably need to act fast. Be prepared to pay the asking price or make a higher offer.

“Inventory is very low, and so if a house comes on the market, it sells very quickly,” says Hummel. “In previous years, in our market, it was a ‘rise’ price range. With rising prices and extremely low interest rates over the past two years, this has become more of a price range for first-time buyers.

“With rising interest rates, it will be interesting to see if this particular market is affected. This price range will have an effect on the mid- to high-end market, because if there are no first-time buyers in the market, mid-to-high-end buyers cannot “go up”.
